Mediation
Mediation That Works
At Assent, we offer a flexible, respectful, and outcome-focused mediation process designed to help you move forward, without the stress and cost of going to court.
Whether you’re navigating parenting arrangements, financial settlements, or both, our team provides a safe, structured space where you can work through issues and reach agreements that work for everyone involved.
What Is Mediation?
Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process where separating couples work with a neutral mediator to resolve issues and reach practical agreements. It helps both parties communicate constructively, stay focused on solutions, and reduce conflict especially important when children are involved.
What Is Family Dispute Resolution (FDR)?
Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) is a specific type of mediation required by Australian law before applying to court for parenting orders. Led by an accredited FDR Practitioner, it supports separated parents to make child-focused decisions and may result in a Section 60I Certificate if court action becomes necessary.
Types of Mediation We Offer
At Assent, we tailor the mediation process to suit your situation.
Common pathways include:
Parenting Mediation
(Family Dispute Resolution)
Support to reach practical and child-focused agreements around parenting arrangements, shared care, communication, schooling, holidays, and more.
Property & Financial Mediation
A clear and structured process to work through your assets, liabilities, superannuation, contributions, and future needs - with guidance to ensure transparency and fairness.
Combined Parenting & Property
If you need to resolve both parenting and financial matters, we can support you to address both in a coordinated and efficient way.
How Mediation Is Delivered
We know flexibility matters. That’s why we offer both online and in-person mediation options.
Online Mediation
Available to clients Australia-wide, online mediation allows you to participate from the comfort of your own home. It’s secure, accessible, and ideal for those living in different locations or seeking convenience and privacy.
In-Person Mediation
For those who prefer to meet face-to-face, we offer in-person sessions at select locations. In-person mediation may be especially helpful for complex or emotionally sensitive matters.
Shuttle Mediation
Where preferred or needed, we offer shuttle mediation - where the parties are in separate rooms (or virtual spaces) and the mediator communicates between them. This can help reduce tension and support more productive discussions.
Support Persons Welcome
We understand that mediation can feel daunting. You are welcome to bring a support person to your mediation session (with prior notice). This could be a friend, family member, or professional support person - someone who can help you feel more at ease during the process.
Our team will guide you through what’s involved and ensure all participants understand their roles in supporting a respectful and constructive session.
Can Lawyers Be Involved?
Yes - while lawyers don't usually attend mediation sessions, you can seek legal advice at any stage of the process. In some cases, particularly for complex matters or where both parties agree, lawyer-assisted mediation may be arranged.
Ready to Start?
We’re here to support you every step of the way - from the initial intake and preparation to finalising your agreement.
